Trade, business and commercial waste and recycling facilities
Despite there being no statutory requirement for the County Council to dispose of commercial waste, a service has been established. This is to provide a disposal facility for businesses seeking to dispose of their waste and recycling using small vehicles, which are not generally suitable for access to tipping areas on landfill sites.
There are now three transfer stations in the county that can accept trade waste and recycling - Burgess Hill, Westhampnett and Crawley (from 1st May 2010, recyclables only). For more information on prices and what can be accepted please see the leaflet ‘Commercial Waste and Recycling Facilities’ from the 'downloads' section of this page.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for admittance to all sites. This includes, but is not limited to, amber flashing beacons, reversing bleepers, hardhat, hi-visibility jacket/vest and steel-toe and mid-sole boots - please see the leaflet for more information.
This service is offered on a basis whereby the charges reflect the corresponding overall costs incurred such as handling, transport and landfill costs and do not unfairly compete with those levied at alternative commercially operated facilities.
Commercial waste and recycling cannot be delivered to household waste recycling sites (HWRSs) and any business trying to use these facilities will be turned away. The provision of height barriers and security guards at the sites help to enforce this policy in preventing traders and small businesses from abusing the service facilities.
Recycling other materials
The West Sussex Sustainable Business Partnership (WSSBP) can help businesses looking to recycle materials that are not currently accepted at the West Sussex County Council commercial waste sites (such as plasterboard). For more information please see the WSSBP website.
