Charity Waste

If you are a registered charity and your waste does not come from:

  • construction and demolition;
  • commercial, industrial or hazardous waste;
  • wastes produced by trading companies not registered as charities; or
  • waste generated outside the county,

...then West Sussex runs a special service for the waste produced by your charity.

There are 2 ways in which we can help:

1. If you only produce jumble sale waste on an irregular basis, please contact Wastes Management Services 2 weeks before each event so we can issue you an exemption form (valid for the date of the form only) to enable you to take the waste to your local Household Waste Recycling Site.

2. If your waste is from regular jumble sales or from any other activity carried out whilst doing your charitable work, then you will need to register with us before you can deposit your waste at Burgess Hill, Westhampnett or Crawley Transfer Stations.

This is because there are concerns that commercial enterprises may abuse the system and attempt to dispose of commercial waste as charity waste. Therefore the Council has a system whereby charity users must register annually to be able to use the facilities and then weigh their waste in when delivering it. This will give the Council greater control over people using the sites, provide an auditable trail in cases of suspected commercial abuse and enable the Council to assess more accurately the quantities of charitable waste arising.

To register on our database please contact us so we can send a registration form to you. We will also need evidence you are exempt as a Waste Carrier. We have a legal duty to ensure this under Section 34 'Duty Of Care' of the Environmental Protection Act.

To obtain evidence of this exemption please contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506506.

To register on the West Sussex County COuncil database, please contact 01243 642143.

Voluntary group protocol

Groups that are not registered as a charity may be able to be assisted in waste collection and disposal via the partnership arrangement between West Sussex County Council and the seven districts and boroughs.

The protocol normally applies to groups that are important within local communities and carry out work such as beach cleans and litter picking or take part in National Spring Clean days.

A group would be required to put their intentions in writing to their district or borough council with a minimum of 1 month's notice before an event or clear up will take place. This will need to include location and type of waste to be collected.
