Better Tomorrows Recycling Sculpture Challenge

Students at each college/university are invited to create a unique sculpture, which promotes the aims of Better Tomorrows and uses recyclable material based on a creative idea around the theme:

'Better Tomorrows in West Sussex'

In addition to the finished sculpture students may submit a sketchbook showing the development of their work, inspirations, decision-making and rationale through drawings, notes and photographs of maquettes. Each college/university will select a shortlist of a maximum of four sculptures from their students to be submitted for the 6th Form category or the University category.

The students/sculptures chosen (up to four can be chosen) by their tutors at the respective college/university, and will then go forward for the final judging to be held at the Cass Foundation Sculpture Park near Goodwood on (location) Friday 15th June 2012 10am to 4pm.

A judging panel appointed by Better Tomorrows and The Cass Sculpture Foundation will view all the submissions short-listed before deciding on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd winners from each category.

Wilfred Cass, owner of The Cass Sculpture Foundation will announce and will award the winners with their prizes.

Many requests are received from event organisers to display the sculptures at events held around the West Sussex region.

A Facebook group (called ‘Better Tomorrows Recycling Sculpture Challenge’) has been set up in order for staff and students at the colleges involved to contribute images of their work during its development and other information that may be of interest to entrants. Background to the Sculpture Challenge

Back in 2009 Better Tomorrows joined with the Cass Sculpture Foundation to develop a sculpture challenge aimed at highlighting the environmental work of Better Tomorrows and to promote the waste prevention and recycling message in West Sussex.

Better Tomorrows Community Interest Company has been established as a vehicle to drive forward behavioural and cultural change within the community in order to meet the requirements of living our lives in a more sustainable manner.

The increasing participation in the challenge over the last three years, particularly this year (2011), with the inclusion of the University Category for the first time, has further highlighted that waste prevention is a subject that we are all very much challenged to deal with. The Recycling Sculpture Challenge has become one of the successful means of communicating the waste prevention message through artistic endeavour.  This is a “challenge” as opposed to a competition, with the artist being challenged to use at least three recycled materials to create the sculpture.
