Sculpture Challenge Winners 2011!

In November 2010, we encouraged art students from six Colleges and two Universities to turn waste resource (as part of their curriculum coursework) into artistic treasures for its third Recycling Sculpture Challenge Contest. One of the requirements was to use at least three types of recycled materials. This year has seen a significant increase in participation on the previous two years. The aim of the contest is to raise awareness and reduce the amount of waste resource going into the bin and landfill.

The contest featured two categories, 6th Form College and University. Having risen to this great challenge, the student finalists and sculptures were chosen by the colleges and universities to go forward for the final judging at the Cass Foundation.  The finalists from University of Chichester, UCA University for the creative arts Canterbury, Central Sussex College, Chichester High School for Girls, Northbrook College, Steyning Grammar School, The Littlehampton Acadamy and Worthing College were invited to the Cass Foundation, Goodwood on Wednesday 8th June for the final judging and announcement of the winners, and prize giving event. The panel of five judges that included sculptor Eve Shepherd stated that it was a challenge for them to choose the winners; such was the very high standard and variation of entries.

Wilfred Cass, founder of the Cass Foundation, presented certificates and cash prizes of £150, £100 and £50 to the respective winners, plus the first and second prizewinners in the University category was also awarded the opportunity to display their sculptures at the Cass Foundation for 6 months.

John De Mierre, Chairman of Better Tomorrows said: "The Sculpture Challenge is part of Better Tomorrows continuing promotion of waste prevention and the need to recycle more in the community, while also encouraging personal action, and increased awareness through artistic creativity".
